The last living dodo was seen in 1662, less than 70 years after the species was discovered. Dodos lived exclusively on the tiny island nation Mauritius, which lies about 500 miles east of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean. The bird's closest living relative is the Nicobar pigeon (which is probably the prettiest pigeon you'll ever see). The 95 complete skeleton was painstakingly constructed by a man who. Here, a 3D digital model of the skull of the only complete skeleton of a single dodo, found in 1903 on Mauritius. In life, dodo birds stood about three feet tall, and weighed between 20 and 40 pounds. The first near-complete skeleton of a dodo bird to come up for sale in nearly 100 years has fetched £346,300 at auction. Only the skull was scanned separately, by carefully detaching it from the neck in order to view hidden bone structures that give clues about the bird's diet. (via PBS Eons) What's the real story of the dodo How did such a unique bird even evolve in the first place And are we really responsible. The scientists sampled the skeletons at greater than 1/100 of an inch resolution by slowly rotating them in front of a high speed laser scanner. These 3-D scans, which were taken from the only two extant skeletons of the bird, gave researchers new insight into the species' anatomy, physiology, and ecological role. This week's science graphic comes from the scans, which were presented in Berlin at the Society for Vertebrate Archaeology's annual meeting. Today, a team of scientists unveiled the first 3-D laser scan of the only two extant dodo bird skeletons. The last known stuffed bird was destroyed in a 1755 fire at a museum in Oxford. And though our culture is rife with caricatures of the bird, for a long time we've had little idea how dodos actually looked and lived. No complete skeleton of a single Dodo bird had ever been retrieved before from an archaeological site in Mauritius. The dodo is the most well-known victim of human-caused extinction.
